Members of the LIRR Expansion Project Team introduced their STEM Competition to Middle School and High School students on Tuesday, February 26 at the Garden City Public Library. The event was introduced and sponsored by the Garden City Friends of STEAM.

For the first time, Garden City High School had three robotics teams competing at the Vex Robotics Competition “In the Zone.” Not only did GCHS have an impressive representation, but all three teams advanced to the quarterfinals.

Thanks to the generosity of the Garden City Library, and GC residents Paul Debany and Bill Scalchunes , several 6th graders in Garden City will be able to compete on their own FLL (FIRST Lego League) Robotics Team this season.

Science Research teacher Dr. Steven Gordon recently showed off the Affinia H400, one new piece of equipment funded by GCFS as part of a science research grant for $2,500 that was approved by Garden City’s Board of Education. The grant money has been used to boost student projects incorporating 3D printing, electronics, coding, and biology and chemistry.

Also funded by GCFS was a 3D scanner, which gives students the ability to let their imagination recreate a multitude of scientific components.

At the 2017 Parent University event, Dr. Craig Capria presented a workshop titled STEM 101 - An Introduction to Tomorrow's Careers, where he discussed the rewards and challenges of STEM related work. GCFS has once again joined with the award-winning Revel Restaurant and Bar to invite the community to an evening of food, drink and live jazz music that will raise funds for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education and robotics programs in Garden City.

GCFS represented with the impressive GCMS and GCHS Robotics teams, taught visitors how to program a robot, and explained how their robotics team competed.

Groundbreaking research into detecting counterfeit drugs and insights into how students view STEM courses were presented by GCHS seniors Alicia Cristoforo and Lindsay Grippo on Monday, May 9 at the Garden City Library.

Dessie DiMino shared her experiences with STEM in a free community presentation on Tuesday, March 8 at the Garden City Library. The talk was part of a “Student to Student” STEM talk series sponsored by the non-profit Garden City Friends of STEM (GCFS) to help educate the public on the numerous career paths available in STEM fields.

Brendan Quinn and Joseph Ienna, two members of the Garden City High School class of 2013, spent part of their holiday break giving a fascinating presentation to Garden City's middle and high school students and parents on "College STEM Courses and Career Opportunities," a free event sponsored by the Garden City Friends of STEM (GCFS) that was held at the Garden City Library on January 14th.

With a festive nod to the start of holiday entertaining, the Garden City Friends of STEM (GCFS) hosted a ‘Revel for Robotics’ fundraiser on November 20. The event, held at Revel Restaurant at 835 Franklin Avenue in Garden City, helped raise funds in support of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs for the children of Garden City.

Two Stewart School students were determined to have a hands-on robotics experience at home after their Summer Enrichment robotics class,  so they set up a lemonade/iced tea stand to cover the cost of a Lego Mindstorm EV3 robot.

The Garden City Robotics League (GCRL) held their Third Annual Celebration and Information Session in April. The event was again, held at The Presbyterian Church in Garden City, and, as in past years, it did not disappoint.

Super Bowl weekend was also a super weekend for the Garden City Robotics League (GCRL), with the "Crazy Creators" one of three Garden City teams to snap up awards at the First Lego League (FLL) Qualifying Tournament, held at Mineola High School.
